Manila and its Environs – Art of Past Centuries

A Sales Exhibition of original paintings, prints, and books by the GALLERY OF PRINTS.
A presentation of maps and views, flora and fauna, people and their costumes, by European artists from the 1500s till 1899.
Lithographed to the highest artistic standards and published in travel works about Asia and Circumnavigations, often in sumptuous hand-coloured editions that were widely read and became best-sellers in their times.

Through the invention of lithography by Alois Senefelder in Munich in 1796, printed art was executed with such detail, accuracy and style of presentation never before achieved. During the first half of the 19th century, French illustrators and engravers created among the largest and most beautiful lithographic views of Manila, whereas specially from 1850–1870, British artists, notably Charles Andrews and Charles Wirgman, painted striking renditions of Manila scenery and people.

As the highlight of the Exhibition, The Gallery of Prints offers for sale rare original paintings of Charles Andrews.
