Description

FIRST edition, XI. Recueil [Report] describing the life and the conversion of the natives in the Pacific (Philippines & New Philippines [Palau]), (Illinois tribe) North America and Asia (India and China) published by Nicolas Le Clerc, Paris, part of the series of Jesuit Letters published in 34 volumes 1707-1776. This volume includes a “Relation en Forme de Journal, de la Decouverte des Isles de Palaos, ou nouvelles Philippines” (pp. 75 -91) which describes the 1710 voyage of the ‘Sainte Trinité’ to the Philippine archipelago (under the Jesuit college of the Philippines), in which Fathers Duberron and Courtil (sic) were lost because they were so eager to plant a crucifix at a small island, that they went ashore despite Captain’s orders, and the vessel was carried away by the wind, leaving them behind. With a folding map of the Philippines, extending from the Philippines to the Carolinas, showing the track of the ‘Sainte Trinité’.
