The Philippines in the 18th Century – A Collection of Prints

A Sales Exhibition of original paintings, prints, and books by the GALLERY OF PRINTS.
Opens on Tuesday, November 28th, 2000 at the 4th floor Art Center SM-Megamall-A, EDSA, Mandaluyong City, MM, at 6.00 p.m. – Exhibit runs until December 9th, 2000.
A presentation of maps and views, flora and fauna, people and their costumes, by Philippine and European artists.
After its successful presentations and book publishing on 19th Century Philippines, the GALLERY OF PRINTS now presents the next Exhibition sequel:
The Philippines in the 18th Century.

Equally adventurous Artists of the 18th Century accompanied voyagers on their trips to barely known lands, like our archipelago. These sketches and illustrations were – on their return – engraved to the highest artistic standards and published in atlases and travel works, often in sumptuous hand-coloured editions that were widely read and became best-sellers in their times, such as the British Lord Anson Caper of the Manila Galleon off Samar or the explorations of the French Count Jean F. Galaup de La Perouse who – after having written down his exploits of the Philippines and other Pacific Islands – had sent his sketches and diaries on another ship back to Europe – perished and vanished in the Pacific shortly thereafter.

As the highlight of the Exhibition, The GALLERY OF PRINTS shows several different editions of the most famous map made in the Philippines by Father Murillo de Velarde as engraved by Filipino artists Nicolas Cruz de Bagay and Francisco Suarez, first published in 1734.

Aside from original paintings, prints and books, excellent reproductions in limited editions are offered for sale as well.

Exhibit Period: 28 November – 9 December 2000
