Description

hand coloured copper engraving.

A RARE Map from ‘…Beschreibung dess gantzen Welt Kraisses…, das alte & neue Asia… [Description of the Entire Globe…Old and New Asia]’ ; vol. 2 of 5, SECOND GERMAN edition, based on the Original French edition of 1683. From the collector’s aspect, this rendition is very peculiar as it represents Manila in Mirror image, meaning Bataan to the East and Cavite to the West – a mistake by the engraver of the German edition -it remained uncorrected over several editions. Mallet was a Cartographer and Engineer (1630-1706), his work in 5 parts describes all nations on all 5 continents. He also was a soldier, 1st in the Portuguese and then in the French army of Louis XIV.
