First edition, “One of the most notable works to have been printed in the Philippines” [Retana]. It is a continuation of Francisco Colin’s Labor Evangelica published in Madrid in 1663. Divided into four parts, the work includes sections on the early missions, the conquest of Mindanao, the discovery of Palau, and numerous biographies of significant Jesuit missionaries in the Islands. The ‘Virgen de la Rosa’ by Laureano Atlas was commissioned as the frontispiece of this volume written by P. Pedro Murillo Velarde (S.J.). This copy lacks the map of Nicolas de la Cruz Bagay. EXTREMELY RARE.

contemporary limp vellum, lacking ties, contents toned, small portion torn and restored in outer margin of A1 touching a few letters, 3S2 abraded in lower outer corner with resulting small holes slightly affecting text. 419pp., with indices. – lacking the map. Printed in a carbon-based ink with red used on the title page, manuscript inscription, spine lettered but faded, with frontispiece engraved plate with depictions of the Virgen de la Rosa and the Virgen de la Paz y Buen Viage, by Laureano Atlas, ff [xi], 419, [6]; historiated initials; text in two columns; internally clean, a fine copy.
