Description

original hand-colour lithograph ornithological print from ‘Daniel Giraud Elliot’s A Monograph of the Bucerotidae, or Family of the Hornbills’; pl. 20. EXTREMELY RARE – this is the first time, we have come across this particular print in 40 years.
This is from the first edition of this “comprehensive treatment of the entire family of hornbills” (Zimmer) from one of the best known American ornithologists of the second half of the 19th century, with illustrations by Keulemans, the most popular ornithological artist of the period.
The Luzon hornbill (Penelopides manillae), sometimes called Luzon tarictic hornbill, is endemic to forests in Luzon and nearby islands in the northern Philippines. It is declining due to habitat destruction, hunting and the illegal wildlife trade.
