A presentation of 2 x 25 views and maps, people and their costumes,
by Western artists about Japan from 1550 till 1910
The collection places particular emphasis on Western art and European books. Some of the items have never been offered for sale in any Gallery or Show in the Philippines since 1970.
From the crude and fanciful depictions of the 16th century to the more accurate maps and pictures of the 19th century, prints were engraved or lithographed to the highest artistic standards and published in atlases and travel books, often in sumptuous hand-coloured editions that were widely read and became best-sellers in their times.
As a further highlight of the Exhibition, The GALLERY OF PRINTS offers for sale rare original atlases from the 16th and 17th centuries, containing especially rare sheets of Japan.
Exhibit Period: 5 April – 4 May 2000.
