Description

copper engraving.

An important German Map in Latin, published in Frankfurt, depicting South East Asia, with an already detailed Philippine Archipelago and the fabled non-existing huge island to the Northeast of Mindanao: San Juan. Papua-New Guinea is connected to Northern Australia where the equally recent Dutch discovery of its West Coast is already indicated. Embellishments include a whale and various sailing ships. There are several slightly different images in existence, prepared by Merian for different publications. This engraving probably originates from “Neuwe Archontologia Cosmica”, published in 1646. Born in Basel on the Swiss-German border, Merian settled in Frankfurt/Germany, and married the daughter of famous engraver and publisher Johann Theodor de Bry which led to a close business co-operation; eventually he inherited the company.

Condition

very good, partly re-margined for matting, minor stains in margins, not affecting plate.
