Description
hand-coloured copper engraving, with Latin text on verso: “Moluccae”. EXTREMELY RARE map from the 1632 edition of the ‘Atlas Sive Cosmographicae’ is a collaborative work by cartographers Gerardus Mercator, Jodocus Hondius and Johannes Cloppenburgh, p. 707/708; Latin edition.
This map is the smaller version of the stunning large Hondius Mercator map centering on the Philippines. A must for every Filipiniana collector.
Gerardus Mercator (1512–1594) was a geographer, cosmographer and cartographer from the Habsburg Netherlands. He is most renowned for creating the 1569 world map based on a new projection which represented sailing courses of constant bearing (rhumb lines) as straight lines – an innovation that is still employed in nautical charts today.
Jodocus Hondius (1563-1612) was a Flemish and Dutch engraver and cartographer. He is best known for his early maps of the New World and Europe, for re-establishing the reputation of the work of Gerard Mercator, and for his portraits of Francis Drake. He inherited and republished the plates of Mercator, thus reviving his legacy, also making sure to include independent revisions to his work.
Johannes Cloppenburgh (1592-1652) was a Dutch cartographer. Based in Amsterdam, he was mainly active between the years of 1610 until 1644. He worked closely with the Hondius/Jansson firm and is credited with the 1630 edition of the Atlas Minor.
