hand-coloured copper engraving. This important map from “A Collection of Voyages and Travels” was published by Henry Lintot and John Osborne in London. Churchill’s work was celebrated for its range of illustrations and original accounts. This map with p. 393 V. II indicated in the upper right, originates from “the Supplement called the Harleian Voyages, compiled from Lord Oxford’s library by Osborne.” (Hill). Hermann Moll was a German emigre who came to London about 1680 & worked there as an engraver, setting up his own business & becoming, after the turn of the century, the foremost map publisher in England. His work covered a wide range of loose maps of all parts of the world, varying from miniatures to very decorative large maps as well as atlases. His work also enjoyed a very high reputation & much of it ‘was copied by other publishers, which he was fully aware of. He also engraved a version with a differently cropped Northern Luzon and different cartouche title, which was used in another publication.
