Troisieme Partie de L’Asie ou Partie de la Chine les Isles de Borneo et Philippines, &c.
SOLD
Description
hand-coloured copper engraving. UNCOMMON.
Very decorative map #429 from the French edition of one of many atlases, after de L’Isle, Allard, Jansson, de Wit, Ottens et al, published by Pierre Mortier’s publisher heirs/successors Covens and Mortier (1721 – c. 1862) of Amsterdam/Netherlands.
The map shows several Pacific voyages from and to the Philippines, and onward to Thailand, probably reflecting the 1686 French Embassy. The Philippines are depicted rather crudely, with the prominent non-existing island Northeast of Mindanao named as “St Jean”. The title “Troisieme Partie…” refers to the large Asia map in four parts which is virtually impossible to find complete, but this map was also individually published in atlases, such as in this case.
Johannes Covens I (1697-1774) and brother-in-law Cornelis Mortier (1699-1783), son of Pieter (Pierre) Mortier (1663-1711), built one of the most famous publishing houses of its time.
