Description

lithograph view from ‘Prout’s Microcosm. The Artist’s Sketch-Book of Groups of Figures, Shipping, and other Picturesque Objects’, pl. 11.
An important and influential English artist, Samuel Prout was employed as ‘Painter in Water-Colours in Ordinary’ to both King George IV and Queen Victoria. His early works included romantic landscapes of Devon and marine scenery. His landscape depictions were of obvious influence to his nephew, Australian water colourist Skinner Prout. This work of Samuel Prout exemplifies his concern with technical aspects of artistry and this is known to be one of his more influential works.
