Humanity at a crossroads: does our species have a future? Humans have subjected the planet to their needs at a breathtaking pace. In the 21st century, they are faced with the shards of their actions: natural resources are exhausted, global warming is a deadly threat, global pandemics are an acute danger. Will we also overcome this crisis? The best-selling authors Johannes Krause and Thomas Trappe show what we can learn from the past for our survival – and what dangers lie in the unbridled power of humans.

Prof. Dr. Johannes Krause, born in 1980, is an expert in decoding DNA from ancient bones. He was the founding director of the Max Planck Institute for the Science of Human History in Jena and has been director of the Max Planck Institute for Evolutionary Anthropology in Leipzig since 2020. He worked with Svante Pääbo on the sequencing of the Neanderthal genome, and in 2010 he discovered the Denisovan, a new form of prehistoric man, based on the DNA of a finger bone. Today, Krause focuses on DNA analysis to explain historical epidemics and human migration.

Thomas Trappe, born in 1981, grew up in Thuringia and now lives in Berlin. He is the editorial director at the Berliner Tagesspiegel and writes primarily about health policy and scientific topics.
